Every time private credit comes up in DeFi, we see people pointing to the same problems: illiquid, opaque, concentrated, correlated. But what if those are problems of bad private credit, not private credit itself?
This new episode of The Edge Podcast brings together three teams at the intersection of TradFi credit and DeFi: David Vatchev from Fasanara Digital, Arpan Gautam from Noon, and Rob from infiniFi.
As Head of Tokenization at a leading institutional asset manager and a fintech investing firm, David makes the case only 0.25% of all real world assets have been tokenized and that the opportunity isn't in tokenizing everything, but in tokenizing the right things. Short duration, asset-backed, diversified receivables financing is fundamentally different from the long duration, concentrated credit that pushed Blue Owl, BlackRock, and Apollo into capping redemptions.
They also walk through how First Brands Group, an automotive parts company that filed Chapter 11 amid allegations of fraudulent invoices and double-pledged receivables, provided the ultimate real-world stress test for Fasanara’s private credit offering (FTAC). Arpan has a unique perspective on what happened with FBG and how resilient FTAC is, having directly allocated funds with Noon’s tokenized stablecoin yield product, and what it proved about portfolio construction.
The group dives further into what the next phase of tokenized private credit needs to get right: real-time verification, radical transparency, and composability that TradFi simply can't offer.
The black box of private credit clearly shouldn’t be trusted in its current form, but the box is opening and likely to improve, and offer better yields for onchain investors, thanks to some of the pioneering work discussed here.
