Mathieu Baril has been in crypto since 2013, when he started reselling Bitcoin mining rigs from his university room in Canada. After building and selling a company to Johnson and Johnson, he went on to fully emerge himself in DeFi summer, which led to a stint at Zapper where I worked with him curating DeFi apps to be supported by Zapper in 2020-2021.
When I worked with Mathieu at Zapper, we were just racing to keep up with new DeFi protocols, integrating new LPs and adding tracking support for your onchain portfolio. But there was always something missing—a customizability to the portfolio tracker. Although Zapper eventually failed for pivoting into dead-end product features for NFTs and Web3 social, Mathieu left determined to build a better customizable reporting platform that professional DeFi investors like him would need.
He founded Octav in December 2021, an onchain data provider and “customizable portfolio intelligence for digital assets used by funds and family offices.”
His team also recently built Tacticalls, a social copy-trading app for options, kinda like FOMO for options. It’s a great tool for tracking trading activity on Derive and Paradex, and better understanding the options positions opened by traders, with the ability to copy their setups and use AI to create your own trades on Derive and Paradex.

Hedging his Uniswap LP positions with options. When Robinhood Chain launched, he provided liquidity to tokenized stock pools on Uniswap.
Taking profit through LP fees instead of selling. He provides wide-range liquidity, collects fees, and sells the fees while keeping his core position.
Finding early signal with Octav using the integrated AI LLM.
