Robert is the Founder and CEO of Superstate, also the former CoFounder of Compound, one of the most important protocols in DeFi history.
Robert saw some early writing on the wall about limitations to DeFi’s growth, while only focused on crypto-native assets and tokens associated with DeFi protocols. In our latest Edge Podcast interview, he explains how he saw enormous “potential TVL” in the $700 trillion of assets offchain, and realized that's where the real growth is.
Robert explains more on why tokenization is evolution for DeFi, not revolution. That all we’ve been building towards over the years has led to this moment where DeFi can truly bring all assets onchain.
We learn how Superstate tokenizes funds and securities for institutional issuers, and why the primary benefits flow to the issuers, not just DeFi users: lower costs, 24/7 settlement, programmability, and global accessibility that traditional rails simply cannot offer. He also shares his views on when tokenization hits its hockey stick moment and why the endgame is primary issuance onchain.
There will come a time sooner than later, where public companies will sell stock only as tokens, and bonds issued directly onchain. Superstate’s building for this future.
Similar to what Robert witnessed with stablecoin growth onchain in the early days of Compound, tokenized assets are set to repeat, but possibly even more accelerated growth. Although, this time it will involve every asset on earth!
